Legare Waring House offers a quiet historic manor nestled in the heart of Charleston. While the home gives you that traditional Southern charm, it’s the surrounding land that puts this wedding venue in a league of its own. With verdant yards surrounded by oaks draped in Spanish moss, you are going to have a photo-worthy backdrop throughout every second of your celebration. As a Charleston wedding photographer, I love working across this town, discovering all the best hidden gems. Here is what you can expect when you book a Legare Waring House wedding!

1500 Old Towne Road, Charleston, South Carolina 29407
Legare Waring House is a manor turned wedding venue that dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when it was added to Old Town. While we don’t have a lot of history regarding the construction itself, many believe the house was finished around 1840 after Jonathan Lucas III acquired the property. He would make his home in the “Brick House” just down the road and visit regularly before his death in 1848. The main house burned down during the Civil War, turning this house into the primary dwelling. The property fell into the ownership of the Legare family in 1878 when it was handed down to Katherine Malcomson Graves and her husband, Edward T. Legare.

Throughout the years, the house lived quite a few lives, eventually falling into disrepair toward the middle of the 20th century. Thankfully, Ferdinanda Backer (also known as Ferdi) inherited the property and made it her mission to restore it.
Throughout the estate, you will continue to see touches of Ferdi around the property, from the restoration and enlargement of the Legare Waring house to the formal live-oak avenue. It is because of her vision that this home has become one of the best wedding venues in all of Charleston!

Today, the Legare Waring House is owned by the South Carolina State Parks Department and has transformed into an event venue ready to give you the day of your dreams! Your day will start bright and early on the second floor with a bridal suite where you can get ready alongside your wedding party. The venue has purposefully placed another suite on the opposite end of the house to ensure you and your partner don’t have to see each other until it is time. This area is a bit more masculine with leather furniture, a private bathroom, a wet bar, and a large screen TV. The house opens up both of these spaces early in the morning, so you can get fully ready on site.

There are a few different spots you can use for an outdoor wedding ceremony. The Avenue of Oaks tends to be a favorite, giving you a flat, green yard surrounded by the live oaks. It offers the feeling of seclusion while giving you plenty of space to accommodate your entire party. Along the west side of the house, you will have The Wedding Oak, where you can get married beneath the branches of the iconic tree. Smaller weddings can use the Wedding Garden, where you can exchange your vows amidst the lush plants. A white altar beneath a towering oak is going to serve as the ideal backdrop for your ceremony.

You are going to have several options for your cocktail hour, including the Wedding Oak, the Wedding Gardens, and the grassy area located right alongside the house. If you do decide to use the Wedding Oak, you will need to rent a generator to use any power.

Your evening will conclude on the Fountain Patio, where you can host a reception next to the house. While you are more than welcome to have your dinner beneath the stars, the area does have tent rigging points in case you would prefer a covered celebration. With the Legare Waring House, you can host up to 150 guests.

This property is full of picture-perfect backdrops you can use throughout your wedding day. The wedding suites come with light colors and vintage accents that work beautifully for candid pictures with your wedding party. Then, once you are done getting ready, you can step outside and get portraits in front of the manor.

The Wedding Oak is the ideal spot for your first look pictures. This legendary tree ties in the site’s history while giving you a dreamy place to share this intimate moment. From there, you can take some portraits along the lake as well as in front of the house’s brick gates.

The Avenue of Oaks works well for your group portraits, offering a sunny spot where you can get some pictures with your friends and family members with the verdant trees behind you.

The Legare Waring House knows how to help you have the day of your dreams! When you rent out the house, you will have access to the entire manor, including the surrounding grounds. This is going to give you access to a catering kitchen as well as a vendor parking area. They require you to rent your tables and chairs from an outside vendor and will give them early access to the house to ensure they can set up on time.

You will be able to use the entirety of the 80 acres for your wedding portraits, and they will give you a golf cart to help you get where you need to be. They let you bring in a live band or a DJ and give you several options for your send-off. Your guests will have a parking lot for added convenience.

If you have been looking for a legendary home for your Charleston wedding, I really think you are going to love the Legare Waring House wedding venue! This stunning estate is going to give you a magical backdrop for your celebration.
